The Master of Technology program in URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING, started in 1972, emphasizes a multi-disciplinary approach focusing on spatial, social, economic and environmental issues related to human habitat in urban, rural and regional contexts. The course aims at a holistic coverage of urban and regional planning issues as well as specific inputs in different areas involving micro and macro planning issues. |

| Urban Development: Preparation of comprehensive urban development plan alternatives at the city levels and formulation of development programs and projects. |
| Regional Planning: Techniques for preparation of regional development plans through spatial and sectoral analysis. |
| CORE COURSES IN URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING |
| Urban and Regional Economics: Theoretical framework for understanding spatial structure of cities and the nature of the regional economy; models of urban growth and distribution of city sizes; analytical techniques such as economic base; input-output and shift share. |
| Rural Development: Concepts, theories and techniques in identifying various regions; development and regional imbalances; functional linkages of settlements and its hinterland to understand and plan for the region including rural development strategies as micro level planning approaches; decentralized planning and community based management systems. |
| Planning Law and Legislation: Process of formulation and enactment of law and legislation; legislation related to town planning; municipality by-laws and regulations on land; slums; co-operatives; transfer of property and rent control. |
| Urban Land Policies: Basics of land market analysis; land policies; bulk land acquisition; land readjustment; urban land ceiling act; land taxation and fringe area development. |
| Urban Management: Basic concepts for understanding the planning and implementation processes at institutions concerned with urban management; the principles and practices of public finance. |
| Remote Sensing and GIS: Use of information systems technology to analyze graphic data; digital methods for graphic analysis and modeling; the course has also includes hands-on time for exploring the remote sensing technology with state-of-the-art software and hardware. |
